Neem oil is a popular natural insecticide for plants used in organic farming and gardening for pest control treatment. Neem kills a wide variety of plant bugs!

The oil comes from the Azadirachta indica tree, a native to India known as the Indian lilac. The tree has hard shell fruits surrounded by an oily pulp.

Its active pesticide compound, Azadirachtin, is in all parts of the plant, with the seeds having the most concentration.

Neem oil is a green, yellow or white oil with a bitter, strong scent.

Neem oil kills plant pests in several ways:

  • By causing the exoskeleton soft-bodied insects to breakdown
  • When insects ingest, the Azadirachtin plays havoc with their hormones. They may lose the desire to eat, make them unable to reach the next developmental stage, or fail to produce eggs.

Neem oil application on plants proves to be an effective pesticide as a spray and a systemic insecticide when used as a neem oil soil drench.

Neem also works as a plant fungicide and a cure for bacterial infections.
