The Beautiful Cypress Vine

This morning glory family member comes from the native tropical regions of northern Mexico to northern South America.

Technically grown as an annual, the cypress vine will typically come back year after year from seeds dropped by the previous year’s plant, thereby making it more of a perennial.

The vine can reach 9 feet in length and offers up 1.5″ inch trumpet-shaped flowers in red, pink, or white that blooms continuously in Temperate regions from August to December.

Growing Your First Cypress Vine

This easy to grow vine does not require the proverbial green thumb.

Start your seeds indoors at least six to eight weeks before the last expected frost.

When planting outdoors find a sunny area your vine will love. The area should offer well-drained soil, rich in nutrients and minerals to help sustain this fast-growing plant.

Plant the vine near a fence or trellis for climbing where the Ipomoea can attach and thrive as it grows. When planting the vine add a healthy mixture of organic compost in the hole as well as around the plant.

Keep the soil moist but not overly wet and always add a high phosphorus fertilizer. Once your vine becomes established it will only require minimal care.

Caring For The Ipomoea quamoclit Vine

One of the most important parts of caring for the cypress vine is to always provide some type of structure for it to latch onto. In the early stages of growth, it is advisable to attempt to train it in the direction you wish it to grow.

Keep in mind that these vines are rather fragile at this stage and throughout their growth period, so additional care is needed.

Many times, these vines begin to grow in an outward direction as opposed to upwards. At the rate they grow, they can quickly overtake a rather wide area and gobble up just about any other plant that is in its way.

These plants are rather hardy and are not susceptible to many diseases and insects. However, if a problem arises treat it with proper amounts of fungicides, insecticides, and pest repellents.

These plants are simply gorgeous that can really add to a bare area of a fence or wall. However, it is important to limit their spreading abilities by removing seed pods early and thinning out plants.

If not, this once beautiful plant can spread and become quite invasive and take over a garden or home. If you are responsible for its growth, this easy to care for vine will come back year after year, gifting you with gorgeous blooms of flowers.
