We all know someone considered the “crazy cat lady”. In fact, some of us might even be one of those affectionate cat lovers.
Many “cat lovers” buy their cats a playground from the store, but what this imgur “cat lady – by sliphur” did instead will amaze you beyond belief.
She took a tree from her front yard, cut it down so she could add stuff on it to make a playground for her cats.
The best part? It is about as cheap as you can get!
About 8 years ago this tree volunteered and grew like crazy. To make room for a new citrus tree she cut down this “weed” tree.
It took some time to stand back and figure out which limbs would remain. The overall idea was to create shelves kind of like a spiral staircase. The good limb to weight distribution showed stability and allowed the classy cat tree to stand without a base.
Two circles were cut to add some weight to the base, they were glued and screwed together and then the tree and the base were attached with lag screws.
Just like lumber which needs to dry out the same goes for using trees and stumps in projects. Before the final trim the DIY cat tree sat around for a few moths to dry a bit.
A laser level helped get the cuts as even and flat as possible before attaching shelves.
Cardboard templates of different sizes were made for each shelf and took some time to determine the shape for each one.
Once done the templates designs were cut with a jigsaw after being transferred to maple plywood.
Lag bolts attached the shelves to the branches and were counter sunk. After mounting the shelves were covered with outdoor carpet from Lowe’s.
Twisted Manilla rope – 300 feet – wrapped different areas to add a finished look. This also provided something for the cats to climb and scratch.
All done and looking good! Top shelf measures 35″ x 22″ and sits about 75″ off the ground. Details via Imgur
